These Are Times That Try Men's Souls
In January of 1776 Thomas Paine published a small book called Common Sense. The plain language that Paine used spoke to the common people of America and was the first work to openly ask for independence from Great Britain.
The book said all kings in general, especially George III of England, were bad. The book also stated that America must be free to make its own way. This book became a best-seller. It made Americans believe that America should be a free and independent nation.
WE NEED REAL CHANGE FOR AMERICA!
Common Sense Ideas for Today's Challenges
Today we as a nation have many challenges facing us that most politicians on both sides of the isle believe require more government intervention. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bigger government, more bureaucracy is not the solution! We need real change for America, not phony Madison Avenue packaged change that is nothing more than more of the same.
Here is the short list of the challenges facing our nation:
- High gasoline prices
- Trade imbalances
- Devalued dollar
- Loss of high paying factory / industrial jobs
- Increased food costs and potential food shortages
- Slow housing market
- Dropping Home Values
- Banking / Wall Street Crisis
- Government deficit
REAL CHANGE SOLUTIONS FOR AMERICA!
Here Are Our Common Sense Solutions
- Open the country up for oil drilling - everywhere! – get the government out of the way!
- Build more domestic refineries – get the government out of the way!
- Build more nuclear power plants - get government out of the way!
- Require domestic steel be used for the above.
Analysis of the above actions
By opening up the country for drilling, building refineries and nuclear power plants, and requiring that domestic steel be used for these projects, several things will happen.
- The price of oil will drop just with the announcement. The speculators in the futures market will stop bidding up the price of oil because they know that once we put our mind to something, it will happen. They are betting on a shortage. With our drilling, that shortage probability goes up in smoke. Next, the oil exporting countries will lower their prices in a vain attempt to discourage us from drilling. We need to remain committed to drilling no matter how low the price of oil goes.
- The number of high paying factory / industrial jobs will increase exponentially in all the areas that support the drilling and construction. Steel mill jobs. Coal mining jobs. Construction jobs. Oil derek jobs. These will all increase by the thousands as we drill for oil, build refineries, and build nuclear power plants. The number of other support jobs for these people will also increase exponentially. To not permit drilling is to send good-paying jobs overseas! It is bad enough when big businesses outsource jobs overseas, but when the federal government prohibits the drilling for domestic oil and the construction of nuclear power plants, it is outsourcing high paying jobs overseas!
- The housing slump will disappear overnight as the people in these new high-paying jobs move into the housing market. This will cause more employment in the construction industry as the economy moves into high gear. It will also cause the value of homes that have dropped in recent years to go back up. People that were not able to refinance their homes or sell their homes because they owed more on their homes than they were worth will now be able to either refinance or sell.
- Tax revenues collected by the government will go through the roof without any tax increase because of all the new high-paying jobs.
- As the new domestic oil comes online in less than 2 years, not the 10 years projected by the “anti-drill, we can’t do anything” crowd, we will eliminate our trade deficit. Our trade deficit is directly related to oil. Take the oil out of the equation and we will have a trade surplus.
- The increase of money going into the government treasury and the elimination of our trade deficit will cause the value of the dollar to rebound and be stronger than it has ever been.
- If the new President keeps a lid on spending (pork, new entitlements and waste), the government will pay off its debt in relatively short order.
- As a result of the first seven items, the stock market will go up sharply recovering everything that it has lost in the last few months hitting new historic highs. Consumer confidence will reach an all time high.
Note: The above is all accomplished without spending one tax payer red cent - it is all done with private money just by getting the government out of the way!
In addition to the above, there are a few other things the government should do to permanently fix things on Wall Street and Main Street.
- Legislation requiring banks to give out sub prime loans should be revoked. Sixteen years ago, there was a big push to give out home loans to people who couldn’t afford them. At the time, the politicians accused the banks of discriminatory lending practices. Legislation was passed, lending requirements were relaxed and the whole sub prime market was created to give loans to people who could not afford them. We did not get into the current mess because of not enough government over-site and regulation, but rather because of government regulation! We were regulated into this mess by a series of laws requiring banks make loans to people that could not pay them back! As long as the housing market was in an upswing, these people could sell their homes instead of defaulting, often making a profit in the process. When the market slowed down, those who bought at the peak were stuck. Instead of taking responsibility for the mess they created, politicians just changed their talking points to blame the banks, calling them predatory lenders. Nothing could be further from the truth! The banks had the government’s gun to their head and they are now the fall-guy for the government’s mistake! Tell the Congress you want the lending laws to revert back to the way they were 35 years ago!
(NOTE: Think about what the government did to the mortgage industry when you hear them talk about nationalized healthcare. Healthcare will only get worse from their actions, but they will not accept the blame. They will have another fall-guy to blame that will require even more government over-site and more government bureaucracy. In both cases, their real goal is not to actually fix something, but to grow the government. The bigger the government is, the more power they have. Their real goal is to increase their power over us!)
- Forget about raising taxes on anyone. History has proven time and again that “real” increases in total taxes collected results from lowering taxes for everyone – including corporations! When corporate taxes are raised, corporations simply pass them on to the consumer as a cost of doing business or move overseas to avoid paying the taxes. Both are bad for the consumer and the US economy. When a corporation moves overseas, taking all of the employment with it, there is a loss of jobs in the US, a loss of tax revenue from all the employees, and a loss of revenue from the corporate taxes. This is not the kind of effect that the power-hungry politicians tell us about when they raise taxes on corporations. When a corporation decides to stay here and raise its prices to maintain its profit margins as a result of the higher taxes, the consumer ends up with less buying power. The increased taxes on the corporations have been passed on to the consumers! Politicians don’t tell the voters this either! The funny thing is that while total tax revenues for the government may go up, the consumers’ buying power and the government’s buying power is going down. Nothing has been accomplished except to put the squeeze on the consumers. A politician that promotes higher taxes on corporations is stupid!
What we should really do is drop all corporate taxes. The number of corporations that would quickly relocate to the United States and the resulting employment would more than make up for the lost revenue from taxing the corporations. Businesses would start making decisions based on smart business principals, not the tax code. We would quickly end up with a worker shortage! Zero unemployment!
- Then there is the part about taxing the rich. First of all, many people whose tax returns “look” rich are not rich! Many of these people are our neighbors who happen to be sole proprietor business people. Their gross revenues may make them appear to be rich, but they are not. These people do not live on their gross receipts; they live on their net incomes which are usually much less than those of W2 employees. For those who may truly be rich, an increase in their taxes always hurts the middle class. When the taxes go up, these people cut back on the extras and luxuries that employ the middle class. Maybe they won’t purchase that new luxury car as often – which will create a slump in the auto industry. Maybe they will stop updating and purchasing homes – which will create a slump in the real estate industry. They probably won’t eat out as often – a slump in the restaurant and entertainment industries. I’m sure you get the picture. When you increase taxes on the “rich,” you end up hurting the middle class!
We are coming to the proverbial fork in the road with 2 clear choices that will provide 2 very different outcomes.
- We can choose to get government out of they way, a government with limited spending and no more give away programs. If we choose this, the United States will enter a period of growth and prosperity that will be greater than at any time in history.
- We can choose a larger government with more regulations, more spending, more taxes, more give away programs. If we choose this, the United States will enter a period of steep economic decline, perhaps even depression. Our standard of living will go down. We will no longer be a super power.
The Choice Is Yours!
